Five Things To Do Before You Cast-On to Set Up for Success

Before you dive headfirst into your next sweater or shawl, take a deep breath and spend a little time getting to know your pattern. Think of it like a road trip—sure, you could just start driving and hope for the best, but wouldn’t it be smarter to glance at the map first? A little preparation can mean the difference between a project that fits like a dream and one that makes you question all your life choices. Here are a few key steps to set yourself up for success—because a little planning now means less frogging later!

Measure yourself

A current set of measurements is the best starting data to help you choose the most appropriate size to make.

Check the Sizing

Pattern sizing is not standardized. Don’t pay attention to the size label (small, medium, large, 1x, etc). Depending on the designer, a size “medium” could be 38 inches, 40 inches, or 44 inches. Select a size  by the actual measurement.

Read the Designers Notes

If there are designer’s notes, there’s something crucial to the success of the project that the designer wanted you to know. She may have done something unique or counterintuitive. Read those notes–they’re important.

Learn any techniques you don’t know

Review the pattern to find any new-to-you techniques. Look up some videos or written instructions and practice a bit on a swatch before you attempt something new in your project.

Practice unfamiliar pattern(s)

Practice any pattern stitches before you cast on. You’ll knit/crochet the project with more confidence and less frogging.

Taking the time to understand your pattern before you cast on can make all the difference between a smooth, enjoyable project and a frustrating game of knit and frog.
